5. Sounds: A writing prompt / 5. Äänet: Kirjoitusharjoitus

(EN) Even though the image above shows a piece of sheet music, I do not ask you to play it in order to do this writing prompt (unless you want inspiration for utter chaos. That's because I placed the notes on the lines randomly). Moreover, music isn't the theme of this post this time.

The theme is sounds. Sounds are a central element in many forms of media: say, movies and video games would easily feel lacking without it in the background. Sometimes, the surrounding natural voices are enough while the video recording goes; but quite often, these natural sounds aren't enough. Sounds may need to be exaggerated, even through manners which may sound funny: e.g. using coconuts to make the listener believe that a horse is walking (this link leads to a site which is unfortunately only in Finnish, but the video shows a foley artist making such sounds).

The prompt is to write based on sound effects. I've picked some sounds from the Freesound account of Yle, the Finnish Broadcasting Company; however, you are free to select your own sources. The sounds are at the end of this post. Wishing everyone a great flow of inspiration!

(FI) Vaikka ylhäällä on palanen nuotteja, en kehota ketään soittamaan niiden perusteella tätä kirjoitusharjoitusta varten (paitsi jos joku haluaa inspiraatiota täydellisen kaaoksen luomiseen. Asettelin nimittäin nuotit viivastolle satunnaisesti). Musiikki ei ole myöskään tämän postin teema tällä kertaa.

Teemana ovat äänet. Äänet ovat tärkeä elementti monenlaisissa mediaformaateissa: esimerkiksi elokuvat ja videopelit tuntuisivat keskeneräisiltä, jos niissä ei olisi ollenkaan äänitehosteita taustalla. Joskus äänitehosteiksi riittävät luonnolliset äänet, jotka tulevat nauhalle kuvatessa; kuitenkin usein käy niin, etteivät luonnolliset äänet riitä. Voi olla, että ääniä täytyy liioitella jopa huvittavilla konsteilla: esimerkiksi käyttämällä kookospähkinöitä siten, että kuuntelija uskoo hevosen kopistelevan lähistöllä (foley artisti Heikki Kossi käyttää kyseistä tekniikkaa tässä videossa).

Kirjoitusharjoituksena on kirjoittaa äänitehosteiden perusteella. Olen valinnut joitain äänitehosteita Ylen Freesound-tililtä; harjoituksen voi kuitenkin tehdä myös käyttäen muita lähteitä. Äänet ovat tämän postin lopussa. Toivotan kaikille paljon inspiraatiota!
